Valsecchi fastest as GP2 test starts
Former GP2 Asia champion Davide Valsecchi topped the opening GP2 test of the year at Jerez today. Over the winter the Italian moved from the former AirAsia (now Caterham) squad to the DAMS team that took Romain Grosjean to the 2011 crown. Valsecchi set a 1m26.014s lap in the morning session, which stood as the best of the day.

Mother of NASCAR driver Matt Kenseth dies at 63
The mother of NASCAR driver Matt Kenseth has died. An obituary from a Cambridge, Wis., funeral home and Kenseths fan website say Nicola Nicki Sue Kenseth battled Alzheimers disease and died Tuesday at age 63 at Oak Park Place in Cottage Grove. Matt Kenseth grew up in Cambridge and won the Daytona 500 in 2009.

Report: Two Japanese suppliers plead guilty for bid-fixing, will pay record fines

Two more Japanese auto industry suppliers, Yazaki and Denso, have been fined by the U.S. Department of Justice and four executives from Yazaki will go to jail, according to reports in the New York Times and Automotive News. Yazaki's $478 million fine and Denso's $78 million fine come on top of the $200 million penalty paid by another Japanese supplier, Furukawa Electric Company, last November as part of a probe into price fixing. Three Furukawa execs also were sentenced to prison.
The DoJ opened the investigation two years ago into collusion among firms setting prices for parts like wire harnesses and ECUs, but is said to have found evidence of such practices since 2000. Yazaki was charged with three felonies, fixing the prices of wire harnesses, instrument panel clusters and fuel senders. Denso was charged with two felonies, conspiring to fix the prices of ECUs and heating control units. Four Yazaki employees, working mainly for its North American operations in Ohio and Kentucky, were charged with violating the Sherman Antitrust Act and will serve from 15 months to two years in prison.
Both companies have pledged to retrain their employees and bolster their antitrust compliance, and both Yazaki's Chairman and CEO said they would return half their pay for three months. The Justice Department investigation continues, and said the CEO of the Original Equipment Suppliers Association, "I'm dead certain that there has to be a lot of concern out there."

Dalziel: Second hard to take
Ryan Dalziel said it was "hard to take" finishing in second position at the Daytona 24 Hours after being on course to win for so much of the race. The 29-year-old Briton, who was bidding to add to his victory at the 2010 event, put his Starworks Riley-Ford on pole position and led large parts of the race with help from his co-drivers Allan McNish, Lucas Luhr, Enzo Potolicchio and Alex Popow. But a major trip through the dirt for Luhr dropped the car off the lead lap during the second half of the event and left the team relying on clever strategy around the caution periods to get back into a threatening position.

Study: Jeremy Clarkson voted worst off-road trip partner in UK survey

If you're about to embark on an off-road driving expedition, you're going to need the right co-pilot. Someone with good knowledge of how a car works, good survival skills and - most important of all - a good sense of humor.
This according to a recent study carried out in the UK by Continental Tires ahead of the launch of the Conti 4x4 Trophy, in which respondents ranked humor as an over-arching qualifying trait for the right person to ride shotgun.
So who did the British respondents choose? The blokes went with a pretty face in glamor model Kelly Brook, while the ladies elected Robert Pattinson of Twilight fame. But it's the least favorite picks that caught our attention.
According to the study, the worst person to have riding shotgun on such an off-road trip would be Jeremy Clarkson. Joining Jezza in the top ten least favorite co-pilots in the study were Katie Price (another "glamor model" like the aforementioned Kelly Brook who goes by the name Jordan), Prime Minister David Cameron, fashion model Kate Moss, TV show hostesses Carol Vorderman and Christine Bleakley, parliamentarian Nick Clegg, pop idol Madonna, Idol host Simon Cowell and F1 driver Lewis Hamilton.
For our part, we're not sure the Top Gear host (or for that matter the McLaren driver) would be at the very top of our list, but he certainly wouldn't be at the bottom. This after a similar study placed Jezza as the top choice for a house-sitter, one of the top five Brits that men would like to have a date with, and, most contradictingly, the country's top pick for a passenger on an on-road trip.

Pasini in Speed Master MotoGP move
Mattia Pasini will step up to MotoGP with the Speed Master squad's CRT programme this year. Report: 2013 Audi RS4 Avant headed to Geneva

Downsizing? What downsizing? While rivals may be replacing cylinders with turbochargers - heck, even Audi itself has done that with the twin-turbo V8 succeeding the V10 in the S8 and such - the new RS4 is reportedly on its way in full-fat 4.2-liter V8 FSI trim.
The report comes courtesy of AMAG, the importer for Audi in Switzerland, which has confirmed that the RS4 Avant (oft spied in prototype guise) is scheduled to debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show this coming March. Along with it, we're told to expect a series of new TSFI engines and an upgraded TT-RS with 360 horses.
As for the RS4 Avant, we're looking at 450 horsepower with all-wheel drive and enough cargo capacity to make any luxury crossover buyer reconsider (much like the S4 Avant pictured above, only more so). That is, buyers in Europe, anyway, as we're not expecting the RS4 to make the trek across the Atlantic.

Chevrolet withdraws from BTCC
Chevrolet and RML will not contest the 2012 British Touring Car Championship, opting instead to focus their efforts on retaining their WTCC crowns. The manufacturer, whose BTCC and WTCC teams are run by RML, finished runner-up to Honda in last year's BTCC teams' championship, while Jason Plato ended the year third in the drivers' standings, having taken eight wins and 12 podiums over the season.
